Preparing for load test of special steel wire rope

Not all load tests are the same, and sometimes we need to adapt to our customers special needs.

For this 108 mm steel wire rope we prepared for the load test by hoisting the wire to a vertical position, which is what you can see in the video. For this maneuver we used our 5 ton CERTEX overhead cranes. This may sound like an easy task, but since the height was too small, we had to break up the floor beforehand in order to fit the 6 meter long wire rope. Because of the welding in the middle of the wire, we had to avoid bending the wire rope to keep the maximum breaking load intact.

Then we started the casting process filling the socket with Wirelock socketing compound. After the casting was completed, the wire rope was installed in our 1,200 ton horizontal test bench. This is shown at the end of the video. The load test was performed with a peak load of 428 tons, where the wire broke.

This load test was carried out in our test center in Esbjerg, Denmark. It was planned together with our colleagues in CERTEX Norway and performed for one of their customers. This job is a perfect example of how our group strength and collaboration across borders benefits our customers, when they need help with a complicated lifting or load test challenge.
